Anti-Wrinkle Injections (Botox)

With age, wrinkles, fine lines and furrows can appear on the surface of the skin. Although wrinkles are a normal part of the ageing process, they can be made worse by repeated movement of the muscles underneath the skin, such as when we smile, causing ‘laughter lines’ around the eyes or when we frown, causing lines and furrows between the eyebrows. These are known as ‘dynamic’ wrinkles.

What Causes Wrinkles?

A number of changes occur in the skin as we age. The dermal layer starts to thin, which makes skin appear noticeably thinner, while collagen production slows. Elastin fibres also start to wear out, and fat cells get smaller. The amount of nutrients available to the skin is also decreased, and a combination of all of these factors means that the skin appears thinner. Without the collagen, elastin and fat underneath skin to provide plumpness, wrinkles and sagging can occur.

How Do Anti-Wrinkle Injections Work?

Anti-wrinkle injections use a medical drug called botulinum toxin (often referred to as Botox for short, although this is actually a brand name). Botulinum toxins work by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. Once the muscle has been injected, it is no longer able to contract. Because the muscle cannot contract, lines and wrinkles are softened and the skin covering the ‘relaxed’ muscles begins to regenerate. Anti-wrinkle injections can also be used in conjunction with other injectables, such as dermal fillers.

What Can Anti-Wrinkle Injections Treat?

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is probably best known for its cosmetic uses of dramatically reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it has a surprising number of medical uses too. For example, some migraine patients can be treated with Botox, and it is also commonly used to treat neck and back pain, facial tremors and dystonia. At Hilton Skin & Body Clinics, we also use Botox to treat hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes excessive sweating. In each application, botulinum toxin works in exactly the same way – by blocking nerve signals.

We use anti-wrinkle injections to treat the following:

  • Frown lines and furrows

  • Horizontal lines across the forehead

  • Crow’s feet and laughter lines around the eyes

  • Peri-oral lines (lines around the top lip)

  • Marionettes (a sad, down-turned mouth)

  • Golf ball/dimply chin

  • Nefertiti (sagging skin around the jawline)

  • Necklace lines (lines around the neck)

  • Decolletage lines (lines around the chest area)

  • We also inject Botox into the armpits to treat hyperhidrosis

During Treatment

During treatment, botulinum toxin (Botox) is injected into the muscles using an ultra-fine needle, causing only very minor discomfort. A series of injections will be made into the muscles, which will typically take no longer than 10-15 minutes. Visible results should be seen within around 7-10 days and could last for 3 to 4 months, depending on the area treated. Patients will then usually be advised to have top-up treatments 3-4 times per year to maintain results.
