Acne Causes

There are some misconceptions about the causes of acne. Many believe that it can be caused by eating the wrong types of foods, although there is no scientific evidence to suggest this, whilst others believe that it can be caused by wearing make-up or by having poor personal hygiene. In fact, too much cleaning can actually strip the skin of its protective oils, making the condition worse.

Acne occurs when the pores in the skin are blocked with either oil, bacteria or dead skin. This can be caused when the follicle (pores are the opening to follicles) produces too much oil or sebum, when dead skin cells block the pore or when bacteria accumulates in the pore. The bacteria associated with causing acne is called propionibacterium acnes or p.acnes. A combination of all three – sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria – will contribute to acne.

Hormonal changes are the most common trigger for acne, either in puberty or through pregnancy. A diet that is high in fat or sugars can also contribute, and this is possibly due to a combination of increased blood sugar and insulin release. Certain medications, such as the contraceptive pill and corticosteroids, can also trigger acne.

Acne Treatment

We offer a range of acne treatments, including a course of acne products, skin peels, IPL and LED phototherapy. Our acne products are designed to reduce and minimise acne and with continued use, to clear skin completely. Some patients are more suited to stronger courses of treatment, and these are outlined in more detail below.

Skin Peels

Skin peels or chemical peels can reduce the symptoms of acne by working deep within the skin, stimulating new cell growth and the production of collagen and elastin, encouraging cell renewal. Dead skin cells are removed and replaced with clean, fresh, new skin, improving the tone and texture of skin over time. Skin peels can easily be combined with our other treatments for improved results, if suitable.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

Intense Pulsed Light can be used to treat mild to moderate acne. The IPL uses a very specific wavelength of light, targeted towards the acne prone area. During treatment, the haemoglobin (the pigment that makes blood red) absorbs this light. In turn, this heats up the very fine blood vessels that supply the sebaceous glands (the glands that produce oil), causing injury. This very slight injury decreases oil production, helping to clear pores. IPL can be used as a one-off treatment, but for the best results, patients are advised to have a course of treatment to both treat and prevent acne.

Before treatment, the area which is troubled by acne should be kept out of the sun as much as possible. Skin should be as pale as possible so that not too much light is absorbed by the skin. After treatment, patients may experience some redness. Typically, aftercare isn’t needed, although if patients experience redness or swelling, aloe vera or ice can be used to soothe the skin.

LED Phototherapy

We also offer LED Phototherapy, using our state-of-the-art Dermalux LED Phototherapy System. It’s a non-invasive, pain-free treatment that harnesses the power of different wavelengths of light (from Light Emitting Diodes) to treat specific skin complaints.

Skin can absorb specific wavelengths of light, and it can utilise this light to stimulate a healing response deep within skin cells. When different types of light are used, cells are energised, increasing cellular metabolism which can in turn build collagen, kill bacteria, boost circulation and boost tissue repair.

Blue light is typically used for the treatment of acne, as it has powerful anti-bacterial properties that can help to purify and decongest acne-prone, problematic skin, reducing the overproduction of oil. Blue LED light has been clinically proven to kill off the p.acnes bacteria. If suitable, we can also use red light (which promotes a healing response), near infrared light (to reduce scarring) or combined red and blue light to induce a range of benefits.

LED Phototherapy is extremely safe and patients may even notice a difference in their skin following the first treatment. For the best results, a course of treatments over 4-6 weeks may be required.

Acne Scarring

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is one of the most sophisticated technologies available to us – we use a fractional system. It removes very small areas of the top layers of skin, helping to repair areas of scarring. At Hilton Skin Clinics, we use the Harmony iPixel, manufactured by Alma Lasers. During the procedure, we’ll apply a local anaesthetic and a numbing cream to the treatment area to keep you comfortable. Using the device, the practitioner will then deliver very targeted pulses of light to the treatment area, removing very thin layers of damaged skin cells in pixel sized zones, whilst leaving untouched skin around each ‘dot’ of damage which will stimulate the natural healing process.

The number of treatments required differs from patient to patient, but typically, treatment courses are 3-6 sessions long, with 4-6 weeks in-between each treatment. The final result could then last for several years.

You might also experience some discomfort and soreness but your practitioner will discuss your aftercare regime with you following treatment.

Electronic Dermaroller EDS

The Electronic Dermaroller EDS is the device that we use for medical skin-needling; it is an established treatment for acne scarring. It stimulates cell regeneration, creating smoother, brighter skin.

During treatment, the practitioner will use the automated, hand-held EDS device on the surface of the skin, producing thousands of tiny needle-columns which penetrate into the dermis of the skin. These tiny micro-medical needle-columns encourage cell regeneration and repair, enabling skin to recover quickly. The intensity of the procedure, including the depth of the needle and the speed can be adjusted depending on how deep the scarring is and the area that is being treated.

Before the procedure, a topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) will be applied in order to minimise discomfort. We can also use a number of topical solutions on the treatment area in order to enable the tip of the needle to move smoothly over the surface of the skin and to further enhance treatment results.

Following treatment, skin may be red and slightly inflamed, but will start to regenerate immediately. It will typically take up to six weeks to see visible results as new collagen builds, new skin cells regenerate and blood supply improves. We usually recommend a course of three treatments spaced six weeks apart, although this may differ from patient to patient and any other treatments being used alongside the Electronic Dermaroller.

LED Phototherapy

We offer LED Phototherapy for the treatment of acne, but it can also be used to treat scarring. Certain pulses of light can be absorbed by the skin, stimulating a healing response which in turn can promote cell renewal and cell regrowth, creating new, smoother skin. LED Phototherapy, which uses Light Emitting Diodes is pain-free and can be used in conjunction with a number of different treatments.

JUL

The clinic really give you good advice in how to look after your skin and didn’t seem too pushy when selling what I needed. I ended having the EDS Dermaroller for my face and neck. I was so worried it would be so painful but surprisingly it's not that bad at all but I did have some anaesthetic cream applied before hand.

The staff are friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. When I arrived everything was explained to me and it was better than I had originally expected. I can’t wait for the next session of microdermabrasion!! I would now recommend them to my friends too.

The clinic is always spotless and has a warm inviting atmosphere. Staff members are extremely knowledgeable about all of their treatments, and they even took the time to speak to me over the phone relating to questions about my treatment before I even booked a consultation. 5 star clinic and would highly recommend to anyone.

I have had 4 treatments here for laser hair removal. The staff are extremely friendly and the product knowledge is excellent. The Treatment itself, well what can I say except… Pain FREE and after the first patch test, I noticed a significant reduction of hair.

The Soprano Laser Hair removal is a virtually pain-free treatment and I am very impressed with the results so far and I am only half way through my course. Looking forward to the final results!
