Pigmentation is the medical term for darker-coloured patches of skin that most commonly appear on the face, hands, décolletage, neck and shoulders as well as other areas, and can really give your age away. Also known as age spots and sun spots, pigmentation is caused by UVA rays, from exposure to sunshine, that penetrate deep within the skin, stimulating melanin production. Pigmentation often occurs 10-20 years after the initial damage, and so sun spots showing on your skin now may well have been caused when you were in your teens, youth or when you were a child. Some data also suggests that pigmentation in younger women might be triggered by hormonal changes from the contraceptive pill or changes that can occur during pregnancy.
There are a range of treatment options available for pigmentation and age spots, including a number of topical creams, but here at Hilton Skin Clinics we use IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment to lighten blemishes and in many cases, to eliminate them completely. Before treatment, skin will be cleansed and a cooling gel applied to minimise discomfort. The practitioner will then pass the hand-piece of the IPL device over the surface of skin, delivering targeted pulses of light to the pigmented areas. The melanin in the pigmented areas of skin absorbs the light, stimulating cell renewal from deep within the skin. The heat from the light destroys the pigmented cells on the outer epidermis, and in most cases, skin from the treated area will flake off within 14 days, yielding lighter, brighter skin underneath. The IPL treatment also helps to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, improving the overall appearance of skin and helping to counteract future damage. Following treatment, the cooling gel will be removed, the skin cleaned and a moisturiser applied. You may feel a little flushed immediately after treatment and have redness and a warm sensation to your skin for a little while, but this will only be temporary.
Skin cells start to renew fairly quickly following an IPL treatment and you will usually see results within a few weeks, but generally, the most noticeable results will be seen after a month. Some people will see a noticeable change in the appearance of their pigmentation after just one session, although 2-4 treatments might be necessary in order to reduce the pigmentation completely, depending on its severity. However, with each treatment, pigmentation should fade.

The clinic is always spotless and has a warm inviting atmosphere. Staff members are extremely knowledgeable about all of their treatments, and they even took the time to speak to me over the phone relating to questions about my treatment before I even booked a consultation. 5 star clinic and would highly recommend to anyoneBarbara Sopata

The clinic really give you good advice in how to look after your skin and didn’t seem too pushy when selling what I needed. I ended having the EDS Dermaroller for my face and neck. I was so worried it would be so painful but surprisingly it's not that bad at all but I did have some anaesthetic cream applied before hand.Jul K
