Skin pigmentation treatment in Reading | Hilton Skin Clinics

Pigmentation/Age Spots

The medical term for darker-coloured patches of skin that can appear on the face, hands, décolletage and neck, pigmentation is often considered a tell-tale sign of ageing.

Also known as age spots, pigmentation is caused when UV rays are absorbed deep into the skin. This stimulates increased melanin (pigment) production. Generally, pigmentation doesn’t actually occur until 10-20 years after the initial damage.

Some recent data also suggests that, if young women show signs of pigmentation, it may have been caused by hormonal changes from things like pregnancy or the contraceptive pill.

Here at Hilton Skin Clinics, we understand how frustrating pigmentation can be, especially on the face. This is why we offer a more advanced, in-depth treatment option than just simply using over-the-counter topical creams.

We utilise IPL (intense pulsed light) technology, which targets light pulses to pigmented areas of skin. The melanin present will then absorb this light, stimulating brand-new cell renewal from deep within the skin.

The light’s heat will then destroy pigmented cells on the outer, visible layers of skin, causing skin from the treated area to flake off within around 14 days. Brighter, more evenly-toned skin is revealed, resulting in age spot elimination and a smoother complexion.

IPL treatment is usually pain-free, and the most you’re likely to feel are short bursts of warmth as light is applied to the treatment area.

During the procedure, the practitioner will gently pass the IPL device across any pigmented areas you want treating. Then, a cooling moisturiser is applied to ensure the skin is as repaired and smooth as possible following treatment.

Clients generally see results within a few weeks, but effects are often most noticeable after a month. We recommend a course of 2-4 treatments for pigmentation to fade completely.
