Hyperhidrosis and Excessive Sweating treatment in Reading | Hilton Skin Clinics

Hyperhidrosis/Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which an individual sweats excessively to regulate body temperature. Excessive sweating can occur in the armpits, palms of hands, face and soles of feet.

Although hyperhidrosis isn’t dangerous and doesn’t usually cause problems, it can cause psychological distress from embarrassment.

If excessive sweating is getting in the way of your daily life, hyperhidrosis may be diagnosed with a course of treatment being recommended.

Hyperhidrosis can be caused by a variety of different factors, including:

  • The menopause
  • An over-active or under-active thyroid gland
  • Being ‘high’ on drugs or drunk
  • Withdrawing from alcohol or drugs
  • Medications such as anti-depressants
  • Other medical conditions such as leukaemia, lymphoma or HIV

Sometimes, making distinct lifestyle changes can be enough to reduce the effects of hyperhidrosis. These can include simply avoiding known triggers, wearing clothes made from all-natural fibres and using strong antiperspirants.

However, for many suffers, they require medical treatment to combat this condition. Here at Hilton Skin Clinics, we offer Botox as a form of successful treatment. Botox blocks the signals from the brain to the sweat glands, successfully interrupting the ‘faulty’ signals that may have been causing excess sweating.

During treatment, a practitioner will inject Botox into the armpits – between 12 and 20 injections are usually given. Typically, this procedure takes around 40 minutes.

To reduce potential discomfort from receiving these injections, a topical numbing cream can be applied before treatment if necessary. The effects of this procedure usually last anywhere between 2-8 months so, to maintain results, consistent treatments will be needed.
