Are you worried about showing your legs this summer? Does the thought of putting on a short skirt, or a pair of shorts, fill you with dread at exposing your pins for all to see? If you’re worried about the appearance of spider or thread veins on your legs, then read on because we have a solution – micro-sclerotherapy.
As we get older, many of us start to notice small red, blue or purple wispy lines appearing on our legs.
Both men and women can suffer from the occurrence of what is medically referred to as telangiectasia; better known as thread or spider veins. They can be caused by simple genetics, but other things can contribute to you developing them on your calves or thighs, such as hormones, weight gain, and if you have a job or lifestyle which means you do a lot of standing.
Unlike varicose veins, thread veins are considered small vein anomalies, and essentially harmless; for this reason, they are regarded as a cosmetic, rather than medical concern by general practitioners. Some thread veins can cause minor leg aching and discomfort, but most are without concern, other than their appearance under the surface of the skin. Thus, thread veins can appear unsightly to many, and cause the owner some distress, and embarrassment, leading to self-conscious feelings and a desire not to bare one’s legs.
With summer on the horizon, now is an excellent time to address this if this concerns you.
Sclerotherapy or Micro-sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy or micro-sclerotherapy, (depending on the size of the veins being treated), is a simple procedure performed by our advanced aesthetic nurse.
It involves the injection of a sclerosing agent, which is a special chemical solution, into the targeted veins. Once injected, the solution causes the small thread vein walls to collapse in on themselves. Treatment doesn’t require any anaesthetic and most people find it painless. When you go home afterwards, we recommend wearing compression garments, such as socks, stockings or tights, for a few days, while we let your body heal itself by absorbing the damaged veins; leaving you with clear skin and smoother, younger looking legs.
You should notice a real difference about a week or two after your first treatment, but depending on the extent of your thread veins you may need another treatment session about a month or so later, and some people need a course of up to four treatments to achieve complete removal, but everyone is different and your case can be assessed at a consultation.
So, now is the perfect time to start a micro-sclerotherapy treatment programme if you want to show off your legs this summer, or just feel comfortable shedding the trousers and long skirts.

By the way, we can also treat thread veins on the face, but we don’t use micro-sclerotherapy for that, due to the risk of scarring. If you have thread veins on your cheeks, or around your nose, then consider enquiring with us about Dye-VL laser treatment for thread veins.
