Liposuction has, for many years, been the gold standard way of removing unwanted areas of fat that don’t respond to changes in diet and exercise regimes. However, even with the more modern methods of fat extraction, liposuction is still an invasive procedure that involves removing fat under suction through a cannula inserted via an incision in the skin. Not something to be undertaken lightly! With an increased desire for less invasive, less painful, safer and less down-time options comes the innovation of cryolipolysis, which is now available at Hilton Skin & Body Clinics.

The term cryolipolysis means – cryo – ‘the production of extreme cold’ – and lipolysis – ‘the breakdown of fat cells due to a chemical reaction with water’ – literally ‘fat freezing’.

This newer way of targeting and reducing areas of unwanted fat, without the need for surgical incisions, is suitable for both men and women to tame their ‘wobbly bits’.

The mode of action behind cryolipolysis was discovered somewhat by accident by two Havard scientists. They noted that children who sucked regularly on ice lollies, or popsicles as the Americans call them, could be observed to have sunken cheeks where the fat had been reduced.

After much more scientific investigation, they discovered that one of the key weaknesses of fat cells is that they die when exposed to extreme levels of cold, around -7°C or -8°C.

The fat cells, which sit in the layer between our skin and our muscles, are much more vulnerable to the effects of cold temperatures than any of the surrounding tissue, so they can be selectively targeted with prolonged cooling. This reduces their number, whilst not harming or damaging any other tissue in the vicinity.

Once a fat cell has been ‘killed’, it releases all the fatty liquid content from within it and the body then sets about cleaning up and metabolising the debris through the lymphatic system, over the following weeks and months. This leads to fat loss that looks and appears in an entirely natural way, with a reduction in the circumference of the area, slowly, over time. One treatment can lead to a 20% reduction in fat in the targeted area.

At Hilton Skin & Body Clinics we use a cryolipolysis machine called CoolTech®. Cryolipolysis with CoolTech is used to reduce fat in specific areas of the body where stubborn fatty deposits exist, such as the thighs, lower buttocks, stomach, knees or back. It is not an alternative to weight loss but is great for inch loss and body contouring in both males and females. With it we can target areas such as love handles, muffin tops and bra bulges for example.

We also have the new CoolTech hand pieces or applicators in clinic which means that we are able to treat arms (bingo wings), inner and outer thighs and flanks. This gives us much more flexibility to offer truly targeted treatments to our clients to address those areas which really bother them.

When you come for cryolipolysis treatment the area being treated is covered with a cool gel pad to protect the skin. This is followed by the application of the hand-held applicator which has a cup-like opening; this acts like a vacuum and sucks up the unwanted fatty region. The CoolTech machine then cools the area for around an hour (depending on exactly where we are treating).

To begin with you will feel a sensation of tugging as the applicator pulls in the area, this becomes less apparent after a few minutes. My people are then quite happy to sit and read, listen to music or play with mobile devices while the treatment session continues.

Once the applicator is removed at the end of the treatment, the area that has experienced the suction will appear a little red and lumpy. Our practitioner will them massage the skin in order to evenly distribute the tissues (and broken down fat) again, until it looks almost normal again. Any initial redness or swelling will subside quite quickly and you’ll be able to get back to your normal life with very little need for any recovery time. The fat from that area will then begin to disappear over the subsequent weeks. Depending on the area being treated, and its size, you may need more than one treatment session (up to around three) in order to get the best results.
