‘Brotox’ – How Botox for Men is no longer a taboo subject

Women have long been known to pluck, preen and pamper themselves in pursuit of younger looking skin as they battle against the hands of time and ageing. Yet for men, it’s always been seen as slightly ‘unmanly’ to so much as look at a bottle of moisturiser; but this is no longer the case!

In fact, men are doing much more than Hollywood actors Pierce Brosnan and Hugh Laurie, who are regularly seen advertising men-only skincare ranges these days, men (and why not!) are actively visiting cosmetic clinics, like Hilton Skin Clinic and asking for treatments to banish their lines and wrinkles. This includes botulinum toxin injections, otherwise more commonly known by the brand name – Botox. We also use another brand of botulinum toxin in our clinic as well, called Azzalure.

In fact, so recent has the trend been for men breaking the taboos and embracing this cosmetic treatment that it’s even got its own new buzzword – Brotox!

Brotox

Many clinics have reported that the number of men visiting them for Botox treatments has gone up by a quarter or even a third in the last couple of years, with men accounting for over a fifth of their clientele overall. Botulinum toxin injections were the number one non-surgical treatment for men in the United States in 2014, according to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), with 11.5% of all such treatments carried out in that year performed on men.

Like women, men get dynamic or movement created wrinkles on their faces. We all get them from making facial expressions such as frowning, smiling or raising our eyebrows at what our friends, children or neighbours have been up to! All this movement, over many years causes the skin overlying the muscles that allow us to express ourselves to wrinkle, creating fine lines or grooves which can often be seen even when we aren’t actively moving our face.

This is where Botox can help.

Injections of the botulinum toxin must be delivered by a fully-trained medical practitioner, like the ones you will find at our clinic, after a face-to-face consultation with a medical prescriber. The injections work by temporarily stopping the nerves, to a lesser or greater extent depending on the dose given, from talking to the muscles in the area being treated. This means that during a period of a few months your skin will become smoother and the lines will be reduced, perhaps even disappearing, as your muscles won’t be constantly moving in that dynamic way anymore. Top-up treatments will be required every 4 to 6 months to maintain the effect.

Men tend to need higher doses than women as they inherently have stronger muscles than women, even in their faces, but treatment is considered to be just as effective for both sexes so even the deepest of frown lines can be targeted.

Anti-wrinkle injections for men

Why should women be the only ones who want to, or can maintain their youthfulness, with the help of a few cosmetic tweaks; men can do it too!

So, guys, what are you waiting for?

It’s not a ‘dirty’ little secret that you need to keep from your friends – they’ll all be jealous that you look great and wishing they looked less frazzled and work-stressed and asking you for your ‘great’ little secret instead!
