When it comes to Egyptian history, there are many things we can all name that show the beauty of this ancient civilisation – the magnificent structure of the Pyramids and the Sphinx, the opulence and splendour of the tomb and death mask of King Tutankhamun, and the long, beautiful swan-like neck of his step-mother Queen Nefertiti.

The name Nefertiti is said to mean “a beautiful woman has come”. Looking at the famous bust of the lady herself, discovered by archaeologists in 1912, it’s clear to see that she was famed for having wonderfully high cheekbones, clear skin and most obviously, a long, smooth and slender neck. This artistic, 3,300-year-old ‘photograph’ of the Pharaoh’s wife has meant that much after her death she has become a time-less image of beauty, and something for both women, and those involved in cosmetic enhancement, to aspire to re-creating as a marker for perfection.

Unfortunately, even at the age of 40, (this is how old Nefertiti was when she died), many of us are not as lucky as the ancient Queen and are already showing signs of ageing in the jawline and neck. Jowling and the dreaded turkey neck are all too common for women (and men) as they age – leading to sagging skin, lines and wrinkles, (sometimes called necklace lines), and prominent downwards neck bands, known medically as platysmal bands.

You can see the platysmal bands (or muscles) in your neck by smiling wide and clenching your teeth tightly together at the same time.

All of these things can make a woman look much older than she is, even worse, if you have cosmetic treatments on your face but don’t consider the ageing of your neck, you can still end up ‘giving your real age away’ without realising.

But fear not, cosmetic treatments are now available to improve the ageing jawline and neck, to lift, smooth and tighten the area. Using Botox (Botulinum Toxin Type A), we also use a brand called Azzalure, we can offer a treatment known as the Nefertiti Lift.

To achieve the Nefertiti lift, our Consultant will assess your neck and jawline during a thorough consultation and prescribe the anti-wrinkle treatment that will redefine the area. Treatment involves injecting small quantities of the botulinum toxin into the lower jawline and the platysma muscles. This weakens and relaxes these neck muscles a little bit so that they stop pulling in a downwards direction, as their tension is reduced, and this causes an uplift effect from the facial muscles which tightens the area and reduces any sagginess in the neck and jawline. It also means that in those with very prominent platysmal bands at rest, they are softened and don’t stand out quite so much, giving a smoother appearance to the neck area, just like Nefertiti herself.

The results from treatment should be visible after a couple of weeks, with repeat treatment required approximately every 3 or 4 months, depending on the level of neck lifting needed.
